You've invested in good skincare. But if you're applying it in the wrong order, you may not be getting everything out of it.
Skincare layering isn't just convention—there's real logic behind it. Applied correctly, each product can do its job without interference. Applied in the wrong sequence, even the best formulas can underperform.
Why Order Matters
The rule is simple: thin to thick, water-based before oil-based.
Here's why it works. Thinner, water-based products absorb quickly and deliver active ingredients directly to the skin. Thicker, richer products sit on top and create a light barrier. The problem arises when you apply a heavy or oily product first—it forms a film on the surface that prevents anything lighter from getting through after it.
A common misconception is that layering order is about "small molecules going first." The real reason is physical: a thicker product creates a barrier that lighter ones can't penetrate.
Apply them out of order and you lose some of what you paid for.
pH matters too. Lower-pH products should go before higher-pH products like moisturizers. And give each layer 30–60 seconds to absorb before applying the next—this prevents pilling and helps everything work better.
Know Your Products: Hydrators vs. Moisturizers
Before we get into the order of application, it's important to understand the difference between two skincare terms that are often used interchangeably but serve very different purposes.
Adds water to the skin using ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to pull moisture in. Lightweight, absorbs quickly.
Seals moisture in. Richer formulas that sit on the surface and lock hydration down.
Think of it this way: Silk brings the water, your cream keeps it there. Both have a role—they work together, not interchangeably.
Your Daily Routine, In Order
-
1
Start clean. A gentle cleanser removes overnight buildup, residual product, and excess sebum so that everything you apply next can actually reach the skin.
-
2Lash/Brow Growth Serum (if using)
Apply directly to lashes and brows on clean skin, before any other product. Water-based serums go first—applying them after a moisturizer or hydrator means a film has already formed, reducing contact with the area you're targeting.
-
3
Your growth factor serum. Apply after the Lash & Brow Serum and before Nourishing Silk—it's a water-based active that absorbs best on clean, uncoated skin. This is the core of your FACTORFIVE routine.
-
4
Your hydrating step. Silk uses humectants to draw moisture into the skin. Apply while skin is slightly damp for best results, and give it 30–60 seconds before the next step.
-
4Eye/Lash Cream (if using)
Apply before your moisturizer. The skin around the eye area is some of the thinnest on the face—a heavier cream applied first will sit on top rather than absorb, so eye treatments always go on earlier in the routine.
-
5
Your moisturizer seals everything in. It's richer than Silk and creates the layer that locks hydration down and supports the appearance of smooth, firm skin.
-
6SPF
Always the final step in your morning routine. Applying sunscreen last allows it to form an even, protective layer on the skin. Layering other products on top can disrupt that protection and reduce its effectiveness.
-
1
Remove the day, including SPF, before applying anything else.
-
2Lash/Brow Growth Serum (if using)
Same as morning: clean skin first, serum second.
-
3
Same as morning—apply after the Lash/Brow Serum, before Nourishing Silk.
-
4
Hydrate first, same as the morning routine.
-
4Eye/Lash Cream (if using)
Same principle as morning—before your moisturizer.
-
5
Your PM moisturizer. Retinol is an evening-only ingredient—it's sensitive to sunlight and works best overnight. It goes in place of the Anti-Aging Cream in your evening routine.
-
+
Use after cleansing, before serums. Masks are a treatment step, not a daily layer—think of them as a reset or boost. Apply, leave on for the recommended time, remove, then continue with the rest of your routine.
Two Myths Worth Clearing Up
-
Myth"Small molecules go first."
The logic sounds scientific but doesn't hold up. What actually matters is texture and film formation—thick products block lighter ones from absorbing. Apply thin-to-thick, not based on molecular size.
-
Myth"Never mix vitamin C and niacinamide."
This one is outdated. Current dermatology doesn't support avoiding them together, and modern formulas are stabilized accordingly. The pairing that does matter: retinol and strong exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) on the same night can compromise your skin barrier. If you're using both, alternate evenings rather than layering them.

The Short Version
-
Thin before thick. Lighter, water-based products go first.
-
Water before oil. Hydrators before moisturizers.
-
Low pH before high pH. Actives and serums before creams.
-
Give each layer a moment. 30–60 seconds between steps prevents pilling and helps everything absorb.
Get the order right, and your routine works harder without adding a single product.
