Microneedling Aftercare: What to Use, What to Avoid & When to Resume Your Routine
Redness, dryness, and sensitivity are normal after microneedling. Here's how FACTORFIVE Educator and SkinCo owner Tiffany Underwood, LE, approaches the first week of recovery.
Microneedling may be a short appointment, but what you do afterward can have a big impact on how comfortable your skin feels while it recovers. Redness, dryness, tightness, and sensitivity are common in the days following treatment, which means your usual skincare routine may need to take a temporary backseat.
So what should you actually put on your skin after microneedling? What should you avoid? When can you wear makeup again? And how soon can you get back to retinol, vitamin C, and the rest of your routine? We asked Tiffany to break down her approach to microneedling aftercare, from the first 24 hours through the first week.
What Happens to Your Skin After Microneedling?
Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the skin's natural renewal response and can help improve the appearance of fine lines, texture, and overall skin quality over time.
Immediately after treatment, it's normal for skin to look red or flushed and feel warm, tight, dry, or more sensitive than usual. These effects typically become less noticeable as the skin settles over the following days.
Because every treatment is different, your aftercare can vary based on the depth of the treatment, the device used, your skin, and your provider's protocol. Your skincare professional should always be your first source of guidance for your specific treatment.
Your Microneedling Aftercare Timeline
The first week is less about adding more to your routine and more about knowing when to hold back. Here's how Tiffany approaches the days following treatment.
Day 1: Keep It Simple
For the first 24 hours, Tiffany's rule of thumb is simple: less is more.
"Avoid touching, picking, rubbing, or exfoliating the skin. And avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, saunas and steam rooms or anything causing sweating."
Tiffany Underwood, LE — FACTORFIVE Educator, Owner of SkinCoShe also recommends avoiding direct sun exposure and using only lukewarm water to cleanse the skin during the first 24 hours. After that, transition to a very gentle, non-active cleanser (like Gentle Gel Cleanser) as directed by your provider. If you need to apply anything to freshly treated skin, Tiffany recommends sticking with whatever your skincare professional has approved for your treatment.
Days 2–4: Hydrate & Support
Your skin may still look flushed or feel dry, tight, or sensitive during this stage. Continue with the gentle routine recommended by your provider and resist the urge to bring your active products back too soon.
If your provider has recommended a post-treatment serum, apply it according to their instructions. FACTORFIVE's Post Treatment Serum (professional-use only) is included in our 7-Day Post-Treatment Kit and is formulated to support the appearance of comfortable, hydrated-looking skin following professional treatments.
Once your serum has absorbed, a lightweight moisturizer can help keep skin feeling comfortable. FACTORFIVE's Nourishing Silk provides lightweight hydration and can be used as part of a gentle post-treatment routine when recommended by your skincare professional.
Days 5–7: Gradually Return to Your Routine
By this point, your skin may be looking and feeling much more like itself. That doesn't necessarily mean it's time to jump straight back into every active product in your cabinet. Tiffany generally recommends waiting 5–7 days before reintroducing active ingredients, while also letting your skin be the ultimate guide.
"Give your skin time to heal and acclimate to the trauma and recover."
Tiffany Underwood, LEOnce you've been cleared to resume your normal routine, FACTORFIVE's Regenerative Serum and Anti-Aging Cream can be incorporated for continued hydration and support of firmer-, smoother-looking skin.

What Should You Avoid After Microneedling?
Some of the most important aftercare steps aren't about what you add to your routine, but what you temporarily leave out.
Active Ingredients
As previously stated, Tiffany recommends setting active ingredients aside for 5–7 days after treatment, although the exact timeline can vary based on your treatment and how your skin is responding. This can include:
- Retinoids
- Vitamin C
- Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
- Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)
- Physical exfoliants
- Benzoyl peroxide
These ingredients may be valuable parts of your regular routine, but freshly treated skin may be more sensitive to them. Wait until your skin has settled and follow your provider's guidance before bringing them back.
Heat, Sweat, Sun & Friction
For the first few days, avoid activities and habits that can create unnecessary heat, sweat, friction, or irritation. That includes:
- Strenuous workouts
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Hot tubs
- Swimming
- Direct sun exposure
- Aggressive cleansing or scrubbing
- Picking or peeling flaky skin
- Unnecessary touching of your face
"Doing too much too soon" is one of the most common mistakes Tiffany sees after treatment.
Tiffany Underwood, LEGiving your skin some breathing room can help make the recovery process more comfortable.
What Can You Use After Microneedling?
Once your provider has cleared you to apply skincare, simple, hydrating formulas are generally the focus of a post-treatment routine. Depending on your treatment and your provider's protocol, ingredients commonly incorporated into post-treatment skincare include:
- Hyaluronic acid
- Peptides
- Aloe
- Copper peptides
- Growth factor proteins
After the first 48 hours, your provider may also recommend ingredients such as ceramides and lipids to support the skin's moisture barrier.
An ingredient being considered "gentle" doesn't automatically mean it's appropriate for freshly treated skin. Follow your provider's instructions for what to apply and when.
Sun Protection
Sun protection is an important part of caring for your skin while it recovers. Follow your provider's instructions for when to resume sunscreen, and once you're cleared to apply it, use a broad-spectrum SPF consistently. Until then, avoid direct sun exposure and use physical protection such as a hat or shade when possible.

What About Professional Products?
Some providers incorporate professional post-treatment products into their microneedling protocols. For Tiffany, FACTORFIVE's EXOFECTA is a particular favorite.
"Right after, I love using EXOFECTA. The exosomes, growth factors, and GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide) aid in regeneration and support healing, firmness, and texture."
Tiffany Underwood, LEEXOFECTA is a professional-only formula and isn't available for retail purchase. If your provider uses it as part of your treatment, follow their specific instructions for when and how it should be applied.
When Can You Wear Makeup Again?
Wait at least 24 hours, and follow your provider's guidance if you had a deeper treatment.
"The skin is temporarily more vulnerable after microneedling (hello, punctures into the skin), and it's important to minimize irritation and possible infection."
Tiffany Underwood, LEMakeup products, brushes, sponges, and applicators can introduce bacteria and friction that freshly treated skin may not be ready for. After 24 hours, check how your skin is responding before returning to your usual makeup routine. If your skin still looks significantly flushed or feels tight, irritated, or sensitive, give it more time and follow your provider's instructions.

What Should Your Skin Look Like During Recovery?
A little post-treatment redness is expected, but it's also helpful to know what may be normal during the first few days. Common experiences can include:
- Redness or flushing
- Mild swelling
- Warmth or sensitivity
- Tight or dry-feeling skin
- Mild peeling or flaking
These effects should gradually improve as your skin recovers.
If you experience significant pain, worsening swelling, blistering, pus, spreading redness, or another reaction that concerns you, contact your provider or a medical professional rather than trying to treat it yourself.
The 7-Day Post-Treatment Kit: Taking the Guesswork Out
One of the most common questions people have after microneedling is simply, "What am I actually supposed to use, and when?" It's a fair question. Your skin may look different from one day to the next, and the last thing you want to do is experiment with a cabinet full of products while it's recovering.
That's why FACTORFIVE's 7-Day Post-Treatment Kit is curated specifically for the post-treatment window. Tiffany sends her microneedling clients home with the kit to help simplify those first several days.
"The PT kit takes the guesswork out of all of this. It will make them feel more confident in the process."
Tiffany Underwood, LEAsk your skincare professional if the kit is part of your treatment plan. Several of the retail products included in the kit can also transition into your everyday routine once your skin has fully settled:
Gentle Gel Cleanser
A gentle, non-active cleanser designed to cleanse without leaving skin feeling stripped.
Regenerative Serum
Formulated to support the appearance of firmer, smoother-looking skin over time.
Anti-Aging Cream
A moisturizing cream designed to support the appearance of hydrated, youthful-looking skin.
Growth Factor Facial Mask
A bio-cellulose mask designed to support a refreshed, revitalized-looking complexion.
The goal isn't to build a complicated new routine after microneedling. It's to have a few dependable products on hand that make those first several days easier, then transition them into your everyday routine once your skin has fully settled.
The Bottom Line
Microneedling aftercare doesn't have to be complicated. For the first week, think less, gentler, and slower. Give your skin a break from active ingredients, heat, friction, and unnecessary touching. Follow your provider's instructions, pay attention to how your skin is responding, and give it time before rushing back into your regular routine.
A little patience during the recovery window can go a long way toward keeping your post-treatment experience comfortable.
