6 Tips to Help Reduce "Maskne"

You have most likely heard the term “maskne” being tossed around the past few months, but what is it exactly?

Very simply put, “maskne” is a term used for mask-related acne and yes, it’s a real thing. With the new norm of wearing masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, many people are experiencing more acne than usual around their mouth and nose. While maskne is definitely not a new phenomenon to those in the medical industry, it is very new to those who are not used to wearing masks for long periods of time.

It makes perfect sense that the general public would see an increase in discomfort and irritation around the mouth and nose due to the mask creating a warm and humid environment which is ideal for bacteria growth. So, what can you do to help reduce maskne?

1. Cleanse and moisturize your face twice daily–morning and night.

While we recommend this for every day skin health, it is now more important than ever to make sure you are taking the time to cleanse your skin of any bacteria and dirt buildup from wearing your mask over a long period of time.

2. Use a high quality moisturizer.

Find a moisturizer that will add a protective layer between your skin and your mask. FACTORFIVE anti-aging cream uses ingredients such as glycerin and dimethicone together to help form a protective seal over your skin. This will help prevent unnecessary irritation.

“Glycerin is a widely used natural ingredient because of its properties to maintain moisture while providing a barrier to the elements,” said Dr. Annie Bowles, former director of research and development at FACTORFIVE Skincare.

“Along with dimethicone, the ingredients work together as a conditioner for your skin that prevents wrinkles, acne, and other forms of skin irritation. Even better to fight off against maskne, our main ingredient (stem cell conditioned media) contains powerful naturally produced proteins that are anti-bacterial, skin reparative, and anti-inflammatory among many other skin-targeted benefits.”

We recommend combining our award-winning regenerative serum with our anti-aging cream as they work together to hydrate, heal, and repair your skin.

3. Always wear a clean mask.

If possible, opt for a cloth mask that is washable, and make sure to have several on hand so you can easily switch them out between uses. Acne-causing bacteria and sweat can easily build up on a mask, so it’s important to make sure you’re using a clean mask each time you wear one.

4. Avoid wearing makeup under your mask.

If possible, forego wearing makeup. Especially when making quick trips (for example, to the grocery store) there’s really no need to wear a full face of makeup when no one is going to see you under the mask as it is. Makeup easily dirties your mask, leading to clogged pores and irritation.

5. Stay consistent with your skincare routine.

We know it’s difficult not to be tempted to try all of the new skincare products promising to rid you of acne forever, but acne-prone products that contain harsh ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can actually irritate your skin further by over-drying your skin.

6. Last but never least, when in doubt: Call your esthetician.

Estheticians are skincare experts who are here to help you find the perfect skincare routine to relieve you all of your skin woes, and even give you a facial boost when needed. While many offices are currently closed, many estheticians are offering virtual consultations. Find a skincare professional near you.
