Women in STEM: Kristen Rueb

Stem Cell Culture Specialist

Kristen began working at FACTORFIVE Skincare in 2020 as our cell culture scientist, specializing in creating our star ingredient, human stem cell conditioned media.

When and how did you decide to get into stem cell research?

As an undergraduate, I was exposed to multiple intriguing biology courses. I was fascinated by the signaling of cells to each other and to themselves. Immunology, cell biology, and developmental biology really opened my eyes to all that the body is accomplishing "behind the scenes." In addition, I watched a biology seminar presented by an MD/Ph.D. student from UCSF that was utilizing Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) in his research of T cells (a type of white blood cell) and the immune system. I searched out the only laboratory on Chico State's campus that was looking into bringing this technology into the lab. I started in the laboratory as an undergrad and carried that into my graduate research. We study blood formation from hematopoietic stem cells in zebrafish.

What is your science background?

I have my bachelor's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from California State University, Chico and I'm currently working on my master's degree in Biological Sciences from CSU, Chico as well.

Did you always love science?

I've enjoyed math and science throughout my academic career although I've had some wonderful teachers which makes a big difference.

What do you love about working with FACTORFIVE Skincare?

I love that FACTORFIVE Skincare is based on stem cell science. It allows me to do what I love while creating a product that helps people.

What’s your favorite FACTORFIVE product and why?

My favorite FACTORFIVE product is the anti-aging cream. I love it because it hydrates my skin and feels really nice after application. Having just celebrated another birthday I am very aware that I need to actively care for my skin.

What advice would you give to young girls interested in science and technology?

Go for it! If it's something that you're passionate about, or even just curious about, dig in and take up space. Don't be afraid to ask questions for clarification and seek out that "Aha!" moment.
